After Saturday’s shocking loss, Josh Pate was decisive in his words about South Florida head coach Alex Golesh. The college football analyst unveiled one of the more memorable descriptions of the weekend, calling Golesh a “killer in plain sight” after the Bulls’ historical 18-16 win over No. 13 Florida in Gainesville.
In a post-game analysis on his YouTube channel, Pate could hardly contain his shock and excitement about what Golesh did. This was the second consecutive time South Florida beat a ranked opponent to open the season, something that had never happened in program history before.
“So I did some research today. Zodiac, Freeway Phantom, Jack the Ripper, many famous serial killers, the identities of whom we never found out,” Pate explained during his show (1:45).
“But we know Alex Golesh. He’s a killer and he’s in plain sight,” he added.
The dramatic description showed Pate’s belief that Golesh has been methodically manipulating the expectations of college football around itself. Prior to upsetting Florida, the Bulls beat No. 25 Boise State 34-7 in their opener.
“And that dude (Golesh) should be the hottest name. In fact, let me scratch that already should have been the hottest name on the tip of anyone’s tongue when they need to replace a coach out there,” Pate stated (3:23).
This upset win glorified Golesh’s stock immediately. Pate felt Golesh should already be thought of when major programs need coaches, considering he will be one of the most sought after coaches in college football.
Pate was adamant that Florida did not lose because South Florida was playing some sort of magic football. He pointed out all the things Florida didn’t execute against a team that they were favored to beat by 17.5 points.

The win also had some historical significance to it. South Florida became the first program in Florida to win at the home field of all six other FBS programs in the state. They also joined a very exclusive club, only the ninth program ever to have wins at Florida, Florida State, and Miami.
Quarterback Byrum Brown showed what South Florida could do in terms of execution. He completed 23 of 36 passes for 263 yards and a touchdown while rushing for 66 yards himself. He performed especially well in light of Florida’s DJ Lagway was supposed to have his way with the matchup.
The climax of the game came with 2:52 seconds left when South Florida forced a Florida three-and-out. Brown then crafted an eight-play, 87-yard drive that resulted in Nico Gramatica’s 20-yard field goal as time expired.
Pate’s frustration with Florida during the game stemmed from 11 penalties for 103 yards and them just being completely dumbfounding in their decision-making throughout the game. He questioned if Napier’s staff had prepared them for the game or if there were more issues at play within the program.
