Josh Pate Points to Deeper Issues Behind Texas’ Struggles as Steve Sarkisian Faces CFP Pressure: “He Gets Paid a Lot of Money”

Coming into the 2025 season, Steve Sarkisian’s Texas had a ton of hype, with the team entering the season as No. 1. After losing their season opener and a disappointing season, the team has struggled and is not even in the Top 12, with Sarkisian now under fire as pressure mounts, with the team’s CFP hopes slipping.

During his “Josh Pate’s College Football Show,” analyst Josh Pate talked about Texas’ struggles, pointing to Steve Sarkisian’s myriad of problems and the coach being overwhelmed by them and not knowing where to start.

“If you’re Steve Sarkisian, you got like 500 changes you could make. How do you know which changes are the proper combination? I’m not asking you to feel sorry for him. He gets paid a whole lot of money. You’re not a real human; you’re just a robot. But he’s an adult. He gets paid a lot of money. You got to produce results, or they’ll find the next guy,” said Pate.

As Pate noted, Sarkisian, one of the highest-paid college coaches right now, can be replaced. This comes after coaching changes happening all over college football, from Florida to Penn State, from Arkansas to LSU.

With a 7-3 record, Texas is ranked No. 17 as of writing. This could still change, but as the College Football Playoffs selection nears, the pressure on Sarkisian to make it to the tournament continues to mount. There are only 12 spots for the CFP, and Texas only has a few games left to catch up, also hoping for the teams ranked above to also lose.

Steve Sarkisian and Texas’s Chances Of Making College Football Playoffs Dwindling Fast

That No. 17 ranking meant that Texas’s ranking has been going down from No. 1 at the start of the season to fighting for a CFP spot. ESPN’s Heather Dinich believes that even if they beat No. 3 Texas A&M, it might not even be enough, as the team’s early-season struggles would have been enough to disqualify Steve Sarkisian’s Longhorns from even trying for a national title this year.

For now, Ohio State is sitting comfortably in the No. 1 spot, as well as No. 2 Indiana and No. 3 Texas Tech. Georgia surged to No. 4 while eternal rivals Alabama fell to No. 10 and is fighting to keep its spot. For now, Texas is only hoping for Alabama to continue its skid down the rankings to even get a chance to get into the playoffs.
