‘Rational Conversation’ About The SEC Gone, Josh Pate Says In Memorable Rant

The upcoming 2025 college football season brings high expectations for the Southeastern Conference and anger from fans who might be tired of the conference’s dominance. CBS college analyst Pate took that latter group to task on the latest episode of his College Football Show podcast in response to a viewer question asking if the SEC could be seen as a powerhouse if another non-SEC school wins the National Championship.

“Does their power wane? No, I don’t think it wanes one bit,” Pate replied, continuing: “I also can’t believe this is the discourse. But then again, I can. Look, a little side opinion – there are some things I believe we are past the point of reasonable discourse on, and the SEC is one of them.”

Pate added, calling out those unreasonable, “You know how everyone was yelling “Death to the SEC” because they thought Greg Sankey was pushing for the AQ structure and shame on the SEC for having the audacity to demand they get four spots. You remember that?”

He went on to call out those same fans complaining about the SEC teams and their strength of schedule. “Yeah, but that’s chapter three,” Pate said in response, “but you’re neglecting chapter one and two, where the totality of their league schedules are tougher than a vast majority of others you want to name. And you can debate me on that if you want. I’m just going to throw math at you.”

The SEC’s teams are still poised to dominate in the upcoming 2025 college football season. As reported by ESPN, the Texas Longhorns take the top slot in the FPI rankings. Two other SEC teams—the Georgia Bulldogs and the Alabama Crimson Tide—are in the top five of those rankings.

Putting a chip on these already dominant programs could become an issue for the rest of college football this upcoming season.
