The firing of Brian Kelly prompted Josh Pate to speak out on his coaching tenure on his college football show, as the analyst didn’t hold back after Kelly’s dismissal, revealing what he described as a shocking level of disengagement from the LSU head coach.
“But in the most critical parts of roster construction season, their portal recruiting, this dude was on a beach and it never really got talked about publicly”, Pate stated (0:00).
“I lost all professional respect for how he was going about his business there when I found out how checked out he was on some of the most critical parts of LSU football”, he explained (0:16).

Perhaps the most damning the allegations were of Kelly’s inaction around personnel decisions. Pate said LSU brought in recruits, who Kelly hardly knew anything about. Pate claimed even staff had been hired without meaningful conversation with Kelly beforehand.
“In some cases, you’re [LSU] landing kids he [Brian Kelly] knows very little about. They added staffers that in some cases, he didn’t know a ton about, you know. Now that this era has come to an end, I think you’d be shocked at how little interaction he had with some people before they were added to his staff”, Pate further elaborated (0:38).
Pate also remarked that the “L” on the team’s chest symbolizes Louisiana, but suggested Brian Kelly was never truly invested in program and only in two words “B” and “K, insinuating he was only concerned for himself during his LSU tenure.

Scott Woodward Cites Unmet Expectations Following Kelly’s Removal
Kelly’s stay at LSU concluded suddenly with a record of 5-3 this season, including a 25-49 home loss to Texas A&M. Athletic Director Scott Woodward posed unmet expectations as part of the rationale for Kelly’s dismissal, which also included bringing LSU back to a national championship level.
The last two football coaches Scott Woodward hired (Jimbo Fisher and Brian Kelly), he gave contracts worth a combined $170 million.
Jimbo later got an extension after he left A&M.
Neither coach ever reached the CFP, and they got fired for a combined buyout of $129 million.

Kelly leaves LSU with a record of 34-14 and the program is now in search of a new coach. Louisiana remains an appealing job for coaches, and it will be curious to see who LSU approaches to be Kelly’s successor.
