It’s been only one week since Michigan fired Sherrone Moore after he was found to have an inappropriate relationship with a staff member. After Moore was fired, Biff Poggi was named the interim head coach for postseason games. In the meantime, Michigan is trying to find a new head coach and Josh Pate may have just the right candidate in mind.
In his latest episode, Pate named Arizona State coach Kenny Dillingham, who is worth $29 million (via Sports Illustrated), as the perfect candidate who could extract the resources at Michigan in the best possible way. Pate also mentioned Alabama head coach Kalen DeBoer, but he said DeBoer is currently in one of the best programs in the country and that’s why he would say no.
“Who I’d go after is Kenny Dillingham, just like I’d go after Kalen DeBoer if I were them. DeBoer’s going to tell them no, he already did,” Pate said (4:50).
“I’m telling you, if I’m advocating for the Michigan side of things, that means I’m putting on my Michigan hat for a second. And putting on my Michigan hat means I look at that guy and see what he’s done in terms of quarterback development. I see what he’s done in terms of lighting a fan base on fire. I love the energy. I love the passion. I love how much his guys would go over a cliff for him. I love the energy that he would bring. And also, aside from him being a good football coach.”

Josh Pate Highlights Upside of Being Michigan HC
Kenny Dillingham or any other potential Michigan head coach candidate would be in for a good opportunity since the program is well-funded from an NIL perspective, especially after the firing of Sherrone Moore.
Pate revealed what the next Michigan head coach would find if they drill deep enough. He said:
“When you do, money is flying all over the place. It’s there. It’s there. I’ve got it on good word. A little birdie has flown in my ear recently and told me that, you know, maybe since the Sherrone Moore firing, there’s been a little bit of an uptick even in NIL contributions. They are primed from an NIL contribution standpoint, from a donor energy and engagement standpoint, to where anybody, but especially a guy as dynamic as that, if they get dropped in that seat, it’s no guarantee from a record perspective.
“I just think it’s a home run, and I really hate saying that. So I just think it would be very successful. Let me put it that way.”
There’s a lot to like about Michigan. They are just one season deep with five-star quarterback Bryce Underwood, who carries massive upside. Their recruiting has been strong over the last few years and it appears whoever takes over there would be in for a good opportunity.
