Jon Sumrall Coaching History: Career Timeline And Rise To Florida Head Coach Explored

Tulane may be at the cusp of reaching the College Football Playoffs, and one of the main reasons for their success this year is head coach Jon Sumrall. However, he is reportedly the one set to fill Florida’s vacant head coaching position. This raises questions about his coaching record as many wonder if he could turn things around for such a prestigious school.

Under John Sumrall this season, Tulane has garnered a 10-2 overall record and may be competing for the AAC championship game against North Texas to determine not just which team will be the conference champion, but also which team will go to the CFP this year. Many believe it would be Tulane.

Sumrall was a college football linebacker during his playing days, as he used to play for the Kentucky Wildcats. His time with the Green Wave has earned him heaps of praise, as legendary former Ohio State head coach and current college football analyst Urban Meyer had once praised him, saying that he is one of the best today and an “up-and-comer.”

“The Sumrall guy, done some research on him at Tulane, I think he’s an up-and-comer,” Meyer said.

Long story short, one of the greatest football coaches ever believes Sumrall to be the future of coaching in college football.

    Jon Sumrall Coaching Record

Sumrall started as a head coach at Troy, leading the Trojans to a 12-2 overall record and a Sun Belt Conference title in 2022, before winning back-to-back in 2023 after an overall record of 11-2. He then transferred to Tulane in 2024, leading them to a 9-5 overall record and 2nd in the conference.

He still needs to lead the Green Wave to a win at the AAC championship game on Friday against North Texas to win his third conference title and first and only with Tulane. Including what he has won so far this season, his overall coaching record is 41-11, which means that even with lower-ranked teams like Troy and Tulane, Jon Sumrall still has a winning record as a head coach.

Because of his winning record at smaller schools, many believe he might be the next head coach at places like LSU, Florida, Auburn, and Penn State. He ultimately chose to go to Florida, and turning the team around could be a monumental task.
