Mentor Johnny Manziel Shrugs Off Diego Pavia, Vanderbilt’s Loss to Alabama With Clear Message: “Doesn’t Change Anything”

Vanderbilt Commodores quarterback Diego Pavia has no reason to worry after the Alabama Crimson Tide defeated them last week to avenge their loss from last season, according to his mentor and former Heisman Trophy winner Johnny Manziel.

The No. 8 Crimson Tide defeated No. 20 Commodores 30-14 to improve to 4-1 on the season while Vanderbilt suffered their first loss of the season, dropping to 5-1.

Manziel recently appeared on the ‘Nightcap’ podcast hosted by Shannon Sharpe and Chad “Ochocinco” Johnson, and said the loss to Alabama should not worry Vanderbilt or the quarterback too much. Manziel shared what he said to his mentee after the season’s first loss.

“Now you look at it overall, and I went up to Diego after the game. This doesn’t change anything for Vandy,” Manziel said (2:40). “I think they didn’t play well in the second half, but they can have a loss in the SEC. He can have a game like that and still do the things that he wants to do and they want to do as a team. Do they have a tough schedule? Sure. But you lost to a good team on the road in Bryant-Denny, which, if you go back through history, not a lot of people have won at.”

How Did Diego Pavia Perform vs Alabama?

Diego Pavia & Co. had a challenging time against Alabama last week. He completed 21 of 36 passes for 198 yards, with one interception and a fumble inside the red zone. After the 30-14 loss, the quarterback acknowledged his shortcomings in the game. However, he is focused on one goal, which is to win the national championship.

“We’ve got every single goal that we want out in front of us,” the quarterback said. “That’s a national championship. Alabama has a loss. We have a loss. A lot of people in the SEC have a loss. We just gotta win out.”
