The possibility was first reported by ESPN’s Pete Thamel, who on Thursday revealed that sources close to the program have informed him that Mateer had practiced with the team and had progressed enough to be considered ready to play Saturday against the Longhorns. This was paired with the fact that Mateer was taken off the SEC availability report, indicating he was prepared to play.

Coach Brent Venables had initially said Monday that he didn’t expect Joh Mateer to be available for this weekend; however, that was before the quarterback was moved from questionable to probable in the SEC availability report mid-week.

John Mateer’s stats so far with the Oklahoma Sooners
Through four weeks of play, Mateer has accumulated 1,215 passing yards, with six touchdown passes and three interceptions. His QBR was 75.5, and he had a completion percentage of 67.4%. More importantly, he was considered the leading candidate for the Heisman Trophy by some analysts and bettors.
At the moment, he has odds of +1000 and has the fifth-best odds to win the coveted award according to BetMGM.
This even affected the odds for this week’s encounter against the Texas Longhorns. ESPN Bet is giving Texas odds of -2.5, making it favorites even though Steve Sarkisian’s team is coming from a difficult defeat in its SEC opener against Florida a couple of weeks ago. This shows how much the oddsmakers believe the Sooners depend on their starting quarterback.
