The Oklahoma Sooners’ season ended on Friday after they lost 24-34 against the Alabama Crimson Tide. Following the loss, quarterback John Mateer, who joined the Sooners in 2025, is facing the heat for it.
Mateer went 26 of 41 for 307 yards with two touchdowns and one interception. The Sooners started strong, but once the inconsistency took over, Alabama took the game away from them.
Barstool Sports’ Brandon Walker posted a video on Instagram, criticizing the quarterback. His criticism included how Mateer can’t throw twice from the same angle, highlighting the inconsistent style of play.
“John Mateer stinks,” Walker said. “John Mateer can’t throw from the same angle twice. He throws here, then he throws here…He has to jump. He sucks. The offensive coordinator for Oklahoma sucks.”
Other aspects of the game and people, including the coach, were also ridiculed by Walker. He claimed that Oklahoma has no running game, and when things aren’t going their way, head coach Brent Venables stands on the sidelines looking clueless.
“That was a sh*tty team,” Walker added. “And that’s a sh*tty quarterback and I’m tired of pretending they were good.”

The Sooners finished the season 10-3 overall and 6-2 in the conference. Mateer accumulated 2885 yards with 14 touchdowns in the season. His production for Oklahoma in his first year dipped from what he did for the Cougars last year.
Even though the numbers aren’t as high as one would expect from Mateer and the team’s overall record could’ve been better, they must’ve done something right to make it to the playoffs. Regardless, Walker doesn’t think so, and he’s no longer going to pretend that they were good.

John Mateer Spoke on His Future
The 21-year-old has one more year of eligibility left. This season didn’t end the way he would’ve hoped for. Still, there will be some positive takeaways for him and other things that he can work on for the future.
After losing to the Crimson Tide, Mateer was asked about what his future looks like as of now. The quarterback stated that he hasn’t thought about it.
“I really haven’t thought about it yet,” the quarterback said. “I’m pretty sure I’ll take some time and weigh all the options, and we’ll see.”
He has the option to return next season with Oklahoma and make one final run in his collegiate career. He can also declare for the 2026 NFL Draft and potentially join the big league. The Sooners would hope that he runs it back with them one last time.
