On Feb. 17, some Oklahoma Sooners players took a detour from the field to the food court. Among them were Michael Fasusi, Sean Hutton, Darius Afalava, Trent Wilson, Courtland Guillory, Kendal Daniels, Derek Simmons, and John Mateer.
They shared their favorite picks from the Sooners’ food spot. From fries to chicken, they had plenty to rave about. Yet, it was Mateer’s preference that got people talking.

John Mateer’s Controversial Pizza Take: How Does He Love It?
Oklahoma Football posted on X a video of their players sharing their best picks from the Sooners’ food spot, cheekily captioned, “You already know we eat right around here.”

But the real kicker came with a follow-up poll: “Should pineapple on pizza be considered a crime? Asking for a friend… @John_Mateer4.” The results were as follows: 42.8% voted “Yes, that’s disgusting,” 48.7% declared “No, it’s delicious,” and 8.5% admitted, “Never tried it.”
This stemmed from Mateer’s confession that he adored pineapple on pizza, an option sadly missing from the Sooners’ food spot.
Mateer confidently reposted the poll results on X with the caption, “Pineapple belongs on pizza.” Fans quickly joined the conversation with hilarious comments:
One said, “You got to pair the pineapple with jalapeños, though. You get the sweet, salty, spicy complex that way.”
Someone else chimed in, “People who hate on pineapple on pizza have never tried it.”
In a playful twist, another fan remarked, “Sorry, I’m not following you on this one, big dawg.”
And another humorously added, “John, bro, I strongly disagree. But I respect your right to smash all the pineapple you wish on your pizzas.”
Mateer announced on Dec. 18, 2024, that he would be joining the Sooners after three seasons at Washington State. After two years as Cam Ward’s understudy, he lit up the field during his breakout 2024 season, becoming one of the most sought-after quarterbacks in the nation.

Mateer threw for 3,139 yards and 29 touchdowns, with a 65% completion rate. He ranked fourth among FBS starters with 1,032 rushing yards (excluding sacks), scoring 15 rushing touchdowns.
As the No. 1 overall player in ESPN’s transfer rankings, he arrives at Oklahoma after a stellar season as the starting QB for the Cougars in 2024. Expectations are high for Mateer’s performance with the Sooners. But they’d better add pineapple pizza to the menu — maybe that’s the secret ingredient to his magic.
