Oklahoma landing a top-tier quarterback was ultimately the biggest win they could ever ask for this season. John Mateer transferred to Oklahoma from Washington State, following his former offensive coordinator, Ben Arbuckle. This was a big win for Oklahoma, especially after one of their worst offensive years in recent memory last year.
Mateer joining the Sooners is an absolute game-changer. He will be placed in a scheme with an offensive coordinator he already knows, and that’s super helpful. Not to mention, Oklahoma has already surrounded him with suitable weapons. Now, Mateer is pushing for the four-star quarterback, Bowe Bentley.

John Mateer Pushes for Four-Star QB Bowe Bentley
Everything is great for the Sooners right now. However, they do have to start planning beyond their current starter, as Mateer certainly won’t be in Oklahoma forever. Oklahoma has a skilled three-star freshman in Jett Niu and Jaden O’Neal, a 2026 four-star quarterback, joining next season, but depth is never insufficient.
For a while now, Bentley has been on the Sooners’ radar. Now, Bentley has trimmed his list to the top three schools he wants to commit to, and spoiler alert: Oklahoma is indeed on that list, joined only by the Georgia Bulldogs and LSU Tigers.
Bowe is a standout quarterback in the 2026 recruiting class. Measuring 6-foot-2 and 200 pounds, he’s a four-star talent, ranked by On3 as the No. 5 QB and No. 111 overall prospect in his year. Bowe will be visiting his three top schools in June.
He’s picked up more than 20 scholarships from Texas Tech, Ohio State, and Florida State. However, he has chosen LSU, Georgia, and Oklahoma as his top three schools, with one of them ultimately taking home the highly sought-after quarterback.
After he announced his visit to Oklahoma, current Oklahoma QB Mateer took to his Instagram post. Mateer posted a short, simple, but meaningful comment to Bentley.
“Yeahhh yeahhh yeahhhh.”
This was more than people realized on behalf of Mateer. The Oklahoma football team has such a culture built that Mateer, who hasn’t even seen the field yet, is already advocating to better his new team when he’s no longer around Oklahoma. His showing support to recruits is critical.

For a team trying to rebuild, this culture instilled is super important. Mateer is handling it like a pro so far. He knows he won’t be in Oklahoma for long and wants to leave the school better than he found it. That culture will help Oklahoma become a recruiting target for years to come.
