How Much Is John Mateer’s Oklahoma Deal?

Mateer’s $2.7 million with the Sooners came on the heels of being pursued by both the Auburn Tigers, who offered $1.5 million, and the Bill Belichick-led North Carolina Tar Heels.

According to Chris Hummer of CBS Sports, Belichick rolled out the big guns, getting both future Hall of Famers QB Tom Brady and TE Rob Gronkowski to call Mateer, in addition to a record-setting offer.

One factor that swung the deal in Brent Venables and the Sooners’ favor was Mateer’s ability to stay close to his home in Little Elm, Texas. It’s a short drive to his hometown from the school’s campus.

Mateer also received a call from another Sooner, Heisman-winning QB Baker Mayfield, who is now with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.

Mateer will also reunite with his former WSU offensive coordinator, Ben Arbuckle, who came to Oklahoma in December after two years with the Cougars. During his time there, the Wazzu offense ranked 12th nationally with 36.8 points per game.
