John Mateer Leads Boomer Sooner, Wins Over Entire Gym in the Process

New Oklahoma Sooners QB John Mateer is making an impact on campus already, leading the 'Boomer Sooner' chant before taking his first snap.

John Mateer has yet to take a snap for the Oklahoma Sooners, but he’s already making an impression. On Feb. 1, 2025, the newly arrived quarterback led a roaring “Boomer Sooner” chant during a women’s gymnastics meet. While fans are eager to see what he can do on the field, Mateer is already proving he understands what it means to be a Sooner.

John Mateer May Be a New Face, but He Has a Familiar Energy

A social media user named @TarikM_Official shared a short clip of Mateer leading a crowd who are chanting the iconic “Boomer Sooner” slogan during a women’s gymnastics meet:

Mateer’s transition to Oklahoma has been one of the biggest stories in college football. The former Washington State quarterback arrived in Norman after a stellar season with the Cougars, where he threw for 3,139 yards and 29 touchdowns in 2024.

His performance made him the top-rated player in the transfer portal, and Oklahoma wasted no time securing his commitment.

The Sooners are looking for a fresh start after a lackluster 2024 campaign.

With Ben Arbuckle leading the offense and Mateer stepping in at quarterback, expectations are high. Mateer showed flashes of brilliance at Washington State, but the SEC presents a new challenge. His ability to adapt will be critical if Oklahoma hopes to return to playoff contention.

    Mateer Embracing the Sooner Spirit

While his football skills are yet to be proven in the SEC, Mateer is already winning over fans in other ways. His leadership at the gymnastics meet wasn’t just about hyping up the crowd — it was a statement. “Boomer Sooner” isn’t just a chant. It’s a symbol of Oklahoma’s history, pride, and relentless spirit.

The phrase “Boomer Sooner” traces back to the Land Run of 1889 when settlers, known as Boomers and Sooners, rushed to claim unassigned lands. Boomers advocated for opening the land, while Sooners snuck in early to claim prime spots.

Over time, the term “Sooner” became a proud identity for Oklahomans and was eventually adopted as the university’s athletic nickname. The chant itself is deeply embedded in OU’s traditions, playing at every major sporting event to rally the crowd.

By taking charge of the moment, Mateer showed he understands the culture he’s stepping into. Oklahoma fans don’t just want a great quarterback. They want a leader who embraces what it means to be a Sooner.

If Mateer can bring the same energy to the field that he brought to that gym, he might just be the quarterback Oklahoma has been waiting for.
