‘I Started Laughing’ – Joey McGuire Counters ‘Easiest Schedule’ Narrative for Texas Tech at Big 12 Media Day

Texas Tech head coach Joey McGuire disagrees with the narrative that the Red Raiders have the easiest schedule in the 2025 season. McGuire shared his thoughts on Texas Tech’s upcoming games during Tuesday’s interview with ESPNU at Big 12 Media Days.

Host Matt Barrie told McGuire during their chat that he is going to see how deep the Big 12 Conference is, noting that Texas Tech’s schedule is going to challenge the best of what he has. McGuire echoed Barrie’s sentiment about the Red Raiders’ tough schedule with his reply.

“Yeah, it was funny,” McGuire said (timestamp 10:21). “Somebody came out and said that we had the easiest schedule and I started laughing. I said, ‘You know we go to Utah and we go to K-State and we go to Arizona State.’”

McGuire added that Texas Tech will also have to deal with consecutive games against two of the most physical teams in the country.

“We’re fixed to play two of the most physical teams when we talk about K-State and BYU back-to-back. And you know, Willie Fritz, Year Two at Houston. I mean, that guy, all he does is win.”

McGuire also pointed out that Arizona State will be a difficult game for Texas Tech as the Sun Devils brought everybody back but Cam Skattebo to their lineup. Arizona State claimed its first-ever Big 12 championship last season.
