Joel Klatt Views Shedeur Sanders as a Top-6 Pick in the 2025 NFL Draft

No one is as used to the negative narratives as the Sanders family. After all that Deion Sanders dealt with, Sanders is now facing his issues with the NFL Draft just weeks away.

Joel Klatt appeared on The Herd with Colin Cowherd and defended Sanders, saying, “I think Shedeur is an incredible player. He should be a top-six pick in the draft. People fail to realize what he was doing at the college level and what he would be asked to do at the NFL level.”

In his second season behind center for the Colorado Buffaloes, Sanders led the team to its first winning season since 2016 with a 9-4 record. Individually, he was outstanding, throwing for 4,134 yards, 37 touchdowns, and 10 interceptions as he led the FBS across multiple categories.

Klatt continued to talk about Sanders being likely to play with a weaker NFL team and how well he might fair: “how many times do we evaluate QBs that are playing with far superior teammates than their opposition. Generally speaking, it is difficult to evaluate them as they are playing on outstanding teams, and their teammates are far better than the opposition.”

“That isn’t the case with Shedeur. He played behind a terrible offensive line; he took a team from one win to a top-25 team. Why? Because of him. He had to raise the level of everyone else around him; he did it without a run game and an offensive line.”Regarding his talent, Klatt said, “He’s hyper-accurate, hyper-accurate the pocket. He can create from a magical standpoint and keep the play alive.

The college football analyst then called out some of the negativity in the media, “I hear this narrative, and unfortunately, this is where we are today with draft coverage. The draft media or certain individuals in the league that weren’t going to draft him start perpetuating these myths and these untruths about these players.”

“To be honest with you, I think this is lazy, and it’s rinse and repeat every year. You take the guy that’s most controversial in the draft, and then we have to talk about this subject because of lazy journalism and big-mouth scout. But when you watch Shedeur, the guy is excellent.”

“He’s got surgical capabilities. He’s on time, accurate, smart, and led a program from one win to nine, which is exactly what he will be asked to do in the NFL.”

There is a mixed bag of landing spots across all mock drafts, with CFN’s latest mock seeing him go to the New York Giants at pick three. Jameis Winston and Russell Wilson signed with the Giants this offseason but not on long-term deals. This would give Sanders time to potentially learn from two veterans and become the franchise cornerstone the Giants desperately need.

It seems likely that Sanders will go at least in the top 10 picks, with several teams still desperate to find their QB for the future. Who takes him is yet to be seen, but this discussion likely won’t go away even when the NFL season kicks off this fall.
