‘One of the Best in the Country’ — Joel Klatt Says Sam Leavitt Could Have a Top-5 Season in 2025

As we head into the 2025 college football season, it feels like there’s a new wave of quarterbacks ready to become the faces of the sport. Fans can’t wait to see guys like Arch Manning, LaNorris Sellers, DJ Lagway, and more take another leap and become superstars.

However, one name has been flying under the radar, and college football analyst Joel Klatt has him as the fourth-ranked quarterback in the country heading into next season.

Sam Leavitt Ranked as Joel Klatt’s Fourth-Best Quarterback in 2025

On his podcast “The Joel Klatt Show: A College Football Podcast,” Klatt dropped an episode in which he ranked the top quarterbacks in the country. Arizona State quarterback Sam Leavitt came in at number four, above names like Drew Allar, LaNoriss Sellers, and Garrett Nusmeier.

Klatt explained his take: “I think he’s a terrific player, and again, I trust Kenny Dillingham. You have Jordyn Tyson on the outside; he’s back. Those are the factors that lead me to believe that Leavitt is going to have one of the five best years at the quarterback position.”

Klatt’s right that the talent and coaching surrounding Leavitt will ensure that he has the best 2025 possible. He also added that while Cam Skattebo was the motor of the Arizona State offense last season, Leavitt still shone.

Arizona State head coach Kenny Dillingham has a proven history of developing quarterback talent. As the Memphis offensive coordinator and quarterback coach, he helped Brady White lead the American in passing yards in 2018. He also helped develop Jordan Travis at Florida State in 2020 and 2021 and helped Bo Nix have a career year with Oregon in 2022.

Leavitt had a great year as a redshirt freshman for the Sun Devils in 2024, throwing for 2,885 yards, 24 TDs, and only six interceptions.

I think there’s a real chance that Leavitt balls out this season and that Klatt isn’t very far off with his take. I don’t think he’s better than guys like Nussmeier, Allar, and Sellers, but it’s fair to say that he’ll be one of the top quarterbacks in the country in 2025.
