Joel Klatt Shuts Down Penn State Playoff Hype in Blunt Message

Joel Klatt is not holding back in his criticism of Penn State. Recently, the Fox Sports analyst who is renowned for getting right to the point in college football arguments expressed his thoughts about the Nittany Lions and let’s just say they weren’t encouraging.

During an appearance on The Next Round YouTube channel, Klatt stated that he is not buying into the hype around their program. While the program, in his opinion, has the pieces but lacks the evidence. He also doesn’t think they should be included in the playoff discussion until that changes.

“There’s something else at play, and I believe its experience,” Klatt said. Have they ever done it? No. Is it something James Franklin has done? Do I firmly think they will? No I don’t think so.” (11:05)

While the statements were very forward, they were fair given the results of the program over the last few years. He was still quick to point out that Penn State’s returning players, particularly in the backfield, with Nick Singleton and Kaytron Allen, and are more than capable of taking the Nittany Lions to the next level.

However, the roster was not enough to convince Klatt. The more important question for Klatt is whether the Nittany Lions will be able to perform when it counts. They haven’t crossed that line yet. They will remain in the almost category until they defeat a playoff-caliber team in an important game.

Penn State’s Path Isn’t Easy, But the Window Is Open

Winning important games is still the largest challenge. Penn State has routinely won games they are supposed to win under James Franklin. However, they are 4-20 against AP Top 10 opponents during his tenure. They lost both of such games last year against Ohio State and Oregon by a single score last season. While that shows progress, nothing seems to be changing.

QB Drew Allar thinks they will benefit this year from their experience in those close losses. He discussed how to bridge the gap with both Franklin and new offensive coordinator Andy Kotelnicki in an interview during the Big Ten media days.

Allar stated that execution is the main priority at this time and is aware of the expectations both inside and outside the building.

“We definitely need to get over that hump,” Allar said.

“We haven’t really been blown out of the water by any team. … It’s just about execution. finding those areas to make one or two more plays throughout those games. That’s going to be our focus,” he added.

Penn State will not be helped by the schedule either. Ohio State and Oregon, both of whom are anticipated to be in the College Football Playoff conversation, will square off against them.

With a seasoned coaching staff, a veteran quarterback, and a locker room that is committed, will this be the year Penn State gets over the hump?
