Jim Nagy Hired by Oklahoma: What This Means for the Senior Bowl, Sooners

Oklahoma has announced that former Senior Bowl director Jim Nagy will become their general manager.

Jim Nagy, who is a former NFL scout and well-known for his role as the director of the Senior Bowl, has long been one of the best evaluators of talent in college football. Now, he has the opportunity to turn the Oklahoma Sooners around as he becomes the program’s general manager.

Why Was Jim Nagy Hired by Oklahoma?

In the current college football world, talent acquisition is the name of the game. Every program in the sport needs someone who can not only evaluate talent at a high level but also know how to bring that talent in.

Oklahoma, who enters its second season in the SEC, needed someone who could ensure that they would have some of the best players in the sport, and by hiring Nagy, they have done that.

Nagy was the executive director of the Senior Bowl, one of the biggest scouting events of the year. He is fantastic at not only evaluating talent but also cultivating relationships with the athletes who come through to the Senior Bowl.

Nagy’s scouting pedigree comes from his 18 years as an NFL scout where he won four Super Bowls as a member of various staffs.

Oklahoma has now got their guy to navigate them through the new world of college football and bring in some high-level talent to the program alongside head coach Brent Venables.

This is a move that should set the Sooners up nicely for years to come.

Who Does the Senior Bowl Replace Jim Nagy With?

While Nagy joining Oklahoma as general manager might be great news for the Sooners, it’s bad news for one of the most beloved events of the offseason, the Senior Bowl.

Nagy ran the Senior Bowl for seven years building it into what it is today, so who will take over the event now?

The most likely person is Sylvester Croom, who currently serves as the senior vice president of Senior Bowl operations and has been Nagy’s right-hand man. Croom has had a long coaching career dating back to 1976.

Croom knows the Senior Bowl well and should be able to take it over rather seamlessly.
