Wide receiver Jeremiah Smith’s Ohio State Buckeyes earned a first-round bye in the College Football Playoff. The program will directly play in the CFP Quarterfinal at the Cotton Bowl Classic on December 31. On Saturday, they learned who they’ll be facing in that matchup.
Ohio State will be playing the winner of the first-round CFP game between No. 7 Texas A&M and No. 10 Miami (FL) in the Quarterfinal at the Cotton Bowl Classic in Arlington, Texas. The Hurricanes defeated Texas A&M in the first round, and they are now scheduled to play the defending champions in the CFP quarterfinal.
Immediately after the Canes 10-3 win on Saturday, Smith took to social media and posted an emoji to suggest that he’s ready for the showdown against Miami:

Under the 12-team playoff format, the top four ranked teams in the final CFP rankings will play in the first round, while the remaining eight teams will play in the first round games. Since the Buckeyes were ranked No. 2, they earned the right to play in the quarterfinals.

Jeremiah Smith Motivated After Being Snubbed For Fred Biletnikoff Award
Jeremiah Smith, who made his college football debut last season, is the leading receiver for the Buckeyes this season. He has caught 80 receptions for a team-high 1,083 yards and 11 touchdowns. After a strong regular season, he was named a finalist for the 2025 Fred Biletnikoff Award, which is given to the best receiver in the league.
Smith lost the award to USC’s Makai Lemon, who caught 79 receptions for 1,156 yards and 11 touchdowns.
After being snubbed for the award, Smith posted a message on social media from the movie Paid in Full, suggesting that he would use this snub as motivation to deliver in the upcoming playoffs and prove why he was deserving of the honor in the first place.
Smith’s Ohio State had an unbeaten regular season, but they ended up losing the Big Ten Championship game to the Indiana Hoosiers 13-10.
