The fight for the College Football Playoff at-large bids got even hotter following the end of the regular season. This is due to Miami being unable to qualify for the ACC championship game, which means they can now only make the CFP through an at-large bid.
Their great rival in this matter? Notre Dame, which is another big program with a 10-2 record and a similar spot in the rankings. For Jason Whitlock, the Irish are clearly the superior pick for the CFP:
“I don’t know who needs to hear this, but Notre Dame is better than Miami. ND improved throughout the season. Miami leveled off. Thank you for your attention to this matter,” wrote Whitlock on X

Notre Dame is currently No. 10 and Miami No. 12, and with BYU being No. 11, but with an opportunity to qualify as a conference, the debate has begun to heat up around the choice between the Fighting Irish and the Hurricanes.

Marco Rubio Speaks Up in Favor of the Miami Hurricanes
Someone who has the complete opposite opinion to Jason Whitlock is the Secretary of State Marco Rubio. Rubio spoke about the subject of the CFP during a recent meeting of President Trump’s cabinet, stating that:
“I’m a Florida Gator, but if the University of Miami gets screwed out of the College Football Playoffs, after going 10-2 and beating Notre Dame, the whole thing should be scrapped and (Trump) is gonna have to take over next year,” said Rubio

While Donald Trump has expressed a desire to intervene in college sports several times, especially around NIL and player compensation, it’s extremely unlikely that a sitting president would have the time or the inclination to get involved in the CFP’s selection process.
