If the Cleveland Browns quarterback saga wasn’t enough, Jason Whitlock is now bringing attention to another “problem” in Cleveland. Known for his blunt takes on various subjects, Whitlock recently went off on the Browns’ assistant general manager.
On an episode of Fearless with Jason Whitlock, he questioned the franchise for appointing Catherine Hickman to such an important position. In 2022, Hickman was appointed as the team’s vice-president of football operations and assistant general manager.
Whitlock believes that the Browns only hired her to check some social obligation boxes. He states that Hickman is not fit for the job, and she doesn’t understand football enough to hold such an important position.
“We’ve created the myth, the lie that women have to be invited into all spaces,” Whitlock said. “All male spaces or that space is sexist, racist, homophobic, whatever. It’s not true. This is a babbling idiot who’s been the epitome of DEI.” (From 6:55)
Whitlock then went through Hickman’s resume to outline that it’s beyond his understanding how a tax lawyer from Canada ended up here. Hickman’s first NFL job was with the Philadelphia Eagles in 2019, as the football operations coordinator.
The passionate rant that Whitlock went on during his show isn’t new. He’s known for doing these from time to time. In this particular case, what stuck out as a sore thumb for him was a video of Hickman explaining how the Browns evaluate young quarterbacks.

Catherine Hickman explained how the Cleveland Browns evaluate QBs
The issue of quarterbacks in the Browns camp is one of the most talked-about topics in the sport. Shedeur Sanders had a great preseason debut, and it showed that he was ready for bigger responsibilities.
However, in Week 1, when the Browns played the Cincinnati Bengals, Sanders was benched. Joe Flacco was chosen as the starting quarterback for the franchise, and it disappointed a lot of fans. That’s why the curiosity around how they reached that decision peaked.
“That’s what makes our job fun and hard, I’d say,” Hickman said when asked about the QB evaluation process. “I’d say I just go back to like the plan that we have in place for these guys when it comes to developing is acquiring as many valuable data points as we can. Now we know these things take time.”
She stated that she has no idea what the situation would be like at the end of the year because she doesn’t have a “crystal ball” and she doesn’t do well with “hypotheticals.”
“None of them are going to take, you know, a back seat in how we plan and program for them with the reps that we have. And then from there we’ll see what the spring brings, and we’ll evaluate all possibilities like we always do.”

In Whitlock’s opinion, Hickman talks in jargon as she doesn’t have a proper understanding of the game and the position she’s commanding. It’ll be interesting to see how Hickman reacts to the new line of criticism.
