Is Pat Shurmur Fired? All We Know About Deion Sanders’ Latest Coaching Staff Changes Amid Colorado’s 3–6 Season in 2025

Colorado Buffaloes head coach Deion Sanders hinted at a personnel change after back-to-back losses against Utah and Arizona. While the head coach adopted silence when asked how exactly he has handled the loss, USA TODAY’s Brent Schrotenboer has the answer.

According to Schrotenboer’s report, offensive coordinator Pat Shurmur was stripped of his playcalling duties and was demoted to quarterbacks coach. The move reportedly happened after the Buffaloes lost at Utah on Oct. 25. Last week, in another beatdown against Arizona, tight ends coach and passing game coordinator Brett Bartolone made the offensive decisions.

The move is in line with Deion Sanders’ comments on Tuesday, where he suggested that a change of this magnitude was in the works.

“I might have already changed it, and you don’t know,” Sanders said. “I don’t do stuff and blow the whistles and make major announcements.”

This is not the first time Coach Prime has made such a decision in the middle of a season. In 2023, he did the same to offensive coordinator Sean Lewis after the Buffs slipped from a 3-0 record to 4-4 before finishing the season at 4-8 with Shurmur acting as co-offensive coordinator at the time.

Deion Sanders Changing His QB1 Once Again

Deion Sanders has once again made the change in the starting quarterback position after Liberty Flames transfer Kaidon Salter failed to live up to high expectations, resulting in 3-6 record.

With only three games remaining, Sanders has announced Julian Lewis as his starting quarterback for Saturday’s game at West Virginia. When asked why Sanders was starting a freshman instead of two veterans on Saturday, Coach Prime replied:

    “Common sense.”

Sanders benched Salter in the second quarter of the game against Arizona. In his place, Lewis did fine, completing 9 of 17 passes for 121 yards and one touchdown. Despite the change in guard, Sanders maintained that Salter will be the backup quarterback to Lewis this week.

Sanders also mentioned in Tuesday’s press conference that though the results have been hard to come by, the players are doing well in practise; therefore, as a group, they are “trending in right direction.”

With three games remaining in the season, Sanders would like to finish on a high note and become bowl eligible.
