Amid a disappointing run by the Florida State Seminoles, the program is scrambling to make adjustments and find a way out. Rumors have been circulating that one of the changes they are considering is firing Mike Norvell, their head coach since 2020.
As per On3, Norvell has spent the weekend in quiet but important discussions with high-level school administrators. The report notes that Norvell held conversations with top decision-makers on both Saturday and Sunday, with the dialogue centered on potential changes in the football program’s front office.
The report stated that there have been no clear signs that staff or coaching changes are locked in. Position coaches have also not been informed of any moves. The situation, however, remains “fluid.”
These conversations come at a time when Norvell’s job status is under more pressure than ever. The Seminoles entered the year needing a bounce-back season after a disastrous 2-10 campaign in 2024.
Instead, Florida State has stumbled again, falling deep into the ACC standings and losing momentum at every critical point. With a $58.8 million buyout tied to Norvell’s contract, Florida State faces a monumental financial decision.
FSU sits at 5-6 and 2-6 in ACC play, far from what the school expected when it committed massive resources to rebuild the program. The pressure boils around Norvell not just because of results, but because the team hasn’t shown the steady improvement needed to justify patience.
With rivals gaining ground and the ACC landscape shifting, Florida State risks falling even further behind if no big changes are made.

Mike Norvell on FSU’s Disappointing Season
Norvell has not shied away from owning the team’s struggles. Since Florida State’s mid-October loss at Stanford, his future has been a constant subject of speculation. That noise only grew louder after Friday night’s 21-11 defeat at NC State, a game that dropped FSU to 5-6 overall and 2-6 in the ACC.
After the NC State loss, Norvell was blunt about where the program stands. He said the Seminoles are nowhere near meeting the expectations set for them.
“Hell no, we haven’t, we’re not even close to living up to expectations,” Norvell said.
All signs now point toward a defining moment approaching for the program. If FSU finishes poorly and misses a bowl game, calls for a coaching change will only get louder. If Norvell manages to steady the team with a victory in the finale, it may buy him time, but it’ll be far from long-term security.
