DJ Lagway took the college football world by storm last season. Leading the Florida Gators to a flawless 6-0 record, Lagway showcased his arm talent and composure beyond his years, finishing as the game’s top passer.
His leadership was on full display in the Gasparilla Bowl, where Florida dominated the Tulane Green Wave with a commanding 33-8 victory, proving that the future of the Gators is in good hands.
DJ Lagway Could Be the Next Big Thing in Florida
Lagway achieved great things for the Gators, as he threw 1,195 yards with 12 touchdowns, nine interceptions, and a 60% completion rate. Moreover, he ranked No. 2 nationally on deep balls with a 95.8 PFF passing grade.
On3’s Ari Wasserman released his Top 10 rankings of returning players in college football, and the Florida QB made it in the top three. Wasserman also gave his reasons for placing the Gators signal-caller at such a high ranking.

“There is no question you’ll find more accomplished players on this list, but you could make the case that Lagway is the most important player to his team in college football. Though there are undoubtedly things he needs to work on, it was evident from the second he stepped on the field at Florida that he has a chance to be one of the great ones,” Wasserman wrote.
“His potential is so high, in fact, that he could be the get out of jail free card that eventually leads to Billy Napier being the Gators coach into the future. Lagway is big, strong, physical and has a rocket arm. This may seem too high right now, but it’ll become clear early in the season next year that he’s one of the most sensational talents in our sport.”
Lagway is turning out to be the ray of hope for the Gators. However, it’s not going to be a smooth ride in 2025.
Lagway Might Struggle Due to Florida’s Silence in the Transfer Portal
Lagway is used to the pressure, as he was already ranked as a five-star prospect, the No.1 quarterback, and the No.3 player in the nation by 247Sports straight out of high school. So, he has already proved that he knows how to fulfill fans’ expectations. Yet, he’ll still need a team to back up his talent.
The Gators weren’t very active in the transfer portal, unlike other teams, and it might affect Lagway’s production in the coming season. Florida is already in a tough position, as its two leading receivers, Elijhah Badger and Chimere Dike, have declared for the 2025 NFL Draft.

As of now, the Gators have added UCLA transfer J. Michael Sturdivant and a five-star prospect Dallas Wilson.
With spring practice approaching, Lagway will be spotted with his new teammates, and the fans will get a glimpse of their teamwork on the field.
