The last few months have been very tough for Deion Sanders. On top of seeing his son, Shedeur Sanders, go through a dramatic draft slide, he was also facing a major health issue that was later revealed to be cancer.
The ex-Colorado quarterback was expected to be among the top 10 picks during the 2025 NFL Draft. However, things did not go his way, and he later ended up sliding down to the fifth round, eventually being picked by the Cleveland Browns as the 144th overall pick.
Deion Sanders’ friend Michael Irvin opened up about how seeing the Colorado coach seeing the difficulties Shedeur faced while he was fighting cancer was heartbreaking.
During his appearance on “All the Smoke” show last week, Irvin said:
“Dude, dude, I almost broke down when I heard he had cancer during the draft.” Do you do y’all understand that he had cancer during and and then his son drops like that? you know, oh, I’ll get emotional and talk about, but but think about you worked all your life for this for this moment and your dad. You worked hard with your son side by side for this moment. And in this moment, you got cancer now. You think you’re dying and not telling anybody. So, at least if I can have this moment, if I’m going to go, then I’m good with that. You know what I mean?” (1:02)
“And then your son drops. That was hard for me to hear that my guy went through that and and to be right there because I didn’t know the details of it and it’s even hard for me to think about it,” he added.

Deion Sanders Reveals Shedeur Sanders’ Stern Message After Week 1 Loss
The last couple of weeks were not the easiest for the Sanders men. Shedeur Sanders was first named the QB3 for the Browns, followed by Shilo getting waived off from the Tampa Bay Buccaneers’ roster and to top it off, Deion Sanders’ Colorado faced a disappointing loss in Week 1 against Georgia Tech.
Talking about a stern message Coach Prime received from his son Shedeur, the Colorado head coach said:
“That’s what I love about Shedeur,” Deion said. “He sees the big picture. He knows we don’t have time to dwell, we regroup, we adjust, and we move forward. That’s what being a Sanders man is about,” Deion said in a conversation with Romi Bean.
Deion Sanders and Co. bounced back and shifted the momentum with their 31-7 win against Delaware in Week 2.
