Insider Names One Player Kyle Whittingham Needs To Keep Away From Transfer Portal And It’s Not Bryce Underwood

Kyle Whittingham has taken over Michigan as their 22nd head coach. The program needed a strong, culture-oriented leader amid all the “malfunctioning” that has been taking place in the last five years, according to Biff Poggi.

The Wolverines ended the 2025 college football season with an overall record of 9-3 under ex head coach Sherrone Moore. He was fired for having an inappropriate relationship with a Michigan staff member and is currently facing charges for breaking in and invading Paige Shiver’s home without permission.

The ex Utah head coach, Whittingham has talked about his conversation with Michigan QB Bryce Underwood and said that he is the right man to lead the program.

Talking about the importance of retaining Underwood along with some more vital names at Michigan, On3 rivals host, EJ Holland said:

“So, priority number one is roster retention for Kyle Whittingham before we even talk about potential additions, right? Starts with Bryce Underwood. That’s why he had a lengthy one-on-one meeting with Bryce Underwood. Then, you know, like you said, you need to get wide receivers around Bryce Underwood. They have a star freshman, Andrew Marsh. He’s another guy we’re tracking. You know, is he going to stay? They need to retain Andrew Marsh. There’s a lot of buzz that he could hop into the portal. So, they need to keep Andrew Marsh. Um, you know, that’s probably those are probably the two big ones obviously they need to keep.”

The analyst further added that Michigan would love to keep Justice Haynes, who had a fantastic season in 2025 as a running back.

Kyle Whittingham Welcomes Ex Utah Coach Jason Beck As Michigan’s OC

Kyle Whittingham has brought many ex Utah coaches to Michigan’s coaching staff since he was hired as their head coach recently.

The ex Utah HC’s brother, Freddie Whittingham, along with Micah Simon and Koy Detmer Jr. has made it to the Wolverines’ staff.

Kyle also welcomed ex Utah offensive coordinator Jason Beck for the same role at Michigan:

“Jason Beck is an exceptional leader with a proven track record as a developer of quarterbacks and a creative play caller. He’s an innovative coach, constantly finding ways to challenge defenses through an efficient, balanced attack — whether on the ground or through the air. We’re looking forward to seeing Jason and our offensive staff mentor and inspire the young men who represent our team. We are thrilled to welcome Jason and his family to the Michigan Football family,” Whittingham said.

Beck also shared his thoughts on the move and said it was an honor joining Coach Whittingham at the University of Michigan.
