Notre Dame has been coming back to form, and it is shown as the Fighting Irish have been dominating the Arkansas Razorbacks. As Notre Dame surges, however, fans are now calling for Razorbacks head coach Sam Pittman to resign.
However, the University of Arkansas’s firing its football head coach may be more complicated than what many people think. On3’s Pete Nakos noted on X that Sam Pittman has a very unusual buyout clause in his contract.
Nakos noted that the coach’s contract states that if he is .500 or above since 2021, which he is currently, his buyout would cause around $9.8 million, or about 75% of the coach’s remaining salary. If he is below the .500 mark since 2021, the buyout would be cheaper, which would be around $6.9 million, which is only 50% of his remaining salary.
A reminder that Sam Pittman has one of the most unusual buyouts in college football.

Pittman’s record at Arkansas is currently at 29-26, and should the Razorbacks lose to Notre Dame, which is highly likely given the massive lead the Fighting Irish have as of writing, it would still be above .500 at 29-27. This gives the school even more problems.
As for how Pittman would get paid, Nakos revealed that the coach “would be paid his buyout in equal installments through the duration of his contract, which expires Dec. 31, 2027.” This means that the school would have to pay him around $376,923 a month until the 2027 season. This is if he gets fired on Oct. 1.
However, should Pittman get a new job immediately, this would offset what the Razorbacks are paying him for his buyout.

Sam Pittman Speaks Up About Razorbacks’ First Half Beating at the Hands of Notre Dame
Pittman, on the other hand, spoke with RSN at halftime after the beatdown they have suffered against the Fighting Irish:
“Well, we can’t stop them and we’re turning the football over,” he said. . “We’ve got to find a way to stop them… We haven’t stopped them all day. They went [45] yards in 2 plays. We’ve got to get our kids back up to get them to play hard.”
Since the halftime break, Arkansas continued to struggle, with Notre Dame securing yet another touchdown and an extra point at the third quarter. This has only amplified calls for his resignation or termination.
