‘I Was Actually in Houston’ — Sherrone Moore Opens Up on Taking Over From Jim Harbaugh As Michigan Head Coach

Sherrone Moore speaks about his arrival to the Michigan Wolverines program and how he replaced Jim Harbaugh.

Sherrone Moore had a decent 2024 season after taking up the reins at Michigan Wolverines. He replaced the legendary coach Jim Harbaugh to take up the top job with the football program. He managed to wrap up the campaign with an 8-5 record.

While they couldn’t make the College Football Playoff—something that raised many eyebrows because they were the defending champions after lifting the golden trophy in the 2023 season— Moore & Co. played a postseason game against the Alabama Crimson Tide at the ReliaQuest Bowl game.

Sherrone Moore Reveals When He Got To Know About Michigan Head Coaching Job

Harbaugh’s departure from Michigan to take up the Los Angeles Chargers job turned out to be an extreme shocker for the fans. He had achieved almost everything at college, but an imminent transition to the NFL was unexpected.

Naturally, a candidate to replace him at the helm was necessary, and Moore was apparently the top choice.

He has been with the program since 2018 and became the perfect replacement for Harbaugh. While speaking to Adam Breneman about his journey this week, Moore explained how he got to know about the news.

“I hope it was easy. I hope I made it easy for him, but I’m sure that there were definitely some conversations that they had to have. And, you know, Coach Harbaugh gets hired with the Chargers, and kind of knew what was going to happen, had an idea, and the announcement was made,” Moore explained the scenario.

“I was actually in Houston. So I was in Houston with Ron Bellamy, our wide receiver coach. I was getting ready to get on a plane to Dallas, and I went through the TSA. My phone buzzes Jim Harbaugh to the Chargers, and I talked to him, like three hours before that, kind of knowing something was going to go on” Moore shared.

“And I get a call from Warde Manuel, our AD. He said, Hey, where are you? I’m like, I’m in Houston. He’s like, get on a plane right now. You got to come back. I’m like, okay, so I call Albert Carnia, our director of player personnel.”

“He books me a flight. I get back that night, I get here, I’m in Schembechler, probably till three in the morning, setting up, you know, get my interview, right? I go to, you know, I do my interview the next day, and then I think it was two days later, I become the head coach, sign it, and then you sit in the chair,” he added.

Next season, Moore will have a challenging task to bring Michigan back into the winning ways.

At first, a playoff berth is necessary. He has already been on the road to recruiting and managed to get some top talents like Bryce Underwood to the program. Expectations are sky-high in 2025.
