Former Auburn Tigers coach Hugh Freeze recently gave an update on his health, and then subsequently his thoughts on his time with his former team as a whole. On Wednesday, Dec. 3, Freeze was the guest of college football analyst Justin Hokanson for an interview on the Auburn Tigers on the AuburnSports YouTube channel, where the 56-year-old was asked all about his time at the helm of the Tigers.
Freeze was recently dismissed by Auburn earlier this year, back in November, and was bought out for over $15 million. This ended his time with the Tigers after three seasons of his tutelage, as he was initially hired back in November of 2022. At one point in the interview, Hokanson then asked Freeze for an update on his health, given that there were rumblings regarding his condition after his departure from Auburn.
“I feel great, man. It really, I had needed a back surgery probably since, I don’t know, January, February, knew that I had some nerve impingement, and you know, you just gut it out and had gotten to where it was certainly painful. Docs took good care of me with some different meds to try to be able to function at a high level. I already had the surgery scheduled for the open week before Mercer because they felt like I would be back,” Freeze said. (1:05)
“So, I’m three weeks out to yesterday, and man, feeling good, pain’s gone. So, I’m very blessed and ready to go for another walk this afternoon with my youngest daughter,” he added.
For his time at the helm of Auburn’s coaching staff, Freeze had a 15-19 overall record (6-16 SEC). The current slew of Tigers then just finished the 2025 season with an overall record of 5-7 (1-7 SEC), as this year’s college football postseason commences without them in the mix of winning it all.

Hugh Freeze Shared What Was One Regret He Had While Coaching The Auburn Tigers
Later on in the interview with Justin Hokanson on the Auburn Tigers on the AuburnSports YouTube channel, Hugh Freeze was asked by Hokanson about him having to balance being the head coach and the offensive coordinator for the Tigers, and if there was anything that he wished he could’ve done better. For Freeze, he is unhappy with how his Auburn run ultimately became, as there were things he would’ve done differently.
“No, obviously, I’m not good with how it went. So, you have to look back and say that I probably was right in my initial decision and probably regret not sticking with that plan, and seeing that setup through. And so, it was just really strange because, you know, I’d done it for so many years and done it at a high level if you really look at. So, I think probably emotions, feelings had a role in it,” Freeze explained. (26:00)
