Head coach Hugh Freeze was hoping his Auburn Tigers would take a positive step forward this season. This is his third season leading the team, and it has been an up-and-down year. The year started well, with the Tigers winning three straight games. Many pundits and Tigers fans believed the team could be turning the corner after two disappointing years under Freeze.
However, things started to fall apart after that point. Auburn lost four straight games to No. 18-ranked Oklahoma, No. 3-ranked Texas A&M, No. 5-ranked Georgia, and No. 19-ranked Missouri. While those are all strong opponents, Tigers fans were disappointed that Auburn could not pick up even one win. The Tigers then bounced back with a win over Arkansas the following week.
While all four losses earlier in the season were somewhat acceptable as they were against ranked opponents, the team hit a new low on Saturday. The Tigers struggled on offense, losing 10-3 in an embarrassing loss to unranked Kentucky. As a result, insider Pete Nakos wrote about Auburn bracing for change in an article he published on Sunday morning.
“A week after picking up its first SEC win of the season last week, the Tigers took a step backward. Auburn lost 10-3 on Saturday night at home to Kentucky, bringing more questions about Hugh Freeze’s future as head coach. Sources across the industry are bracing for change, though. The cost to fire Freeze on Sunday would be roughly $15.8 million, one of the more manageable buyouts in college football.
“For the Tigers to just reach bowl eligibility, they would have to pick two wins over the final three, with games against Vanderbilt, Mercer and Alabama. Hugh Freeze now has a 6–16 record in SEC play and just one AP Top 25 win at Auburn. Conversations have been ongoing among top boosters in recent weeks about Freeze’s future, sources have indicated to On3.”
Sundays are typically off days at Auburn. As of 7 a.m. CT on Sunday, no team meeting has been scheduled.https://t.co/er4peHwn2u https://t.co/5ThqcMVJUv

Auburn Has Not Had a Winning Season in Over 5 Years
Frustration has been building in the Auburn fanbase since before head coach Hugh Freeze arrived. The team has struggled to stay competitive in the SEC, not achieving a winning record since going 9-4 in 2019. The team has not appeared in a division or conference championship game since 2017.
The Tigers were one of the most consistent teams in the SEC in the 2000s and early 2010s, but the past decade has been a disaster for the program. Now, all signals are pointing towards another coaching change.
