This year in particular, there is a heightened sense of importance. Yes, the usual tradition courses through the veins of the matchup, but with the undefeated Midshipmen looking to steer a course to the College Football Playoff behind Heisman Trophy-contender Blake Horvath, there is an additional competitive zeal to a game that has been traditionally one-sided.
The Fighting Irish have their own date with postseason destiny to fulfill. The 12-team playoff doesn’t allow for an automatic entry for Notre Dame, but win out the rest of this season, and a spot among the nation’s elite — so often out of reach for the program under the previous format — is Marcus Freeman’s for the taking. First, they have to stop the Midshipmen in Week 9.
Calling the game for Notre Dame on the radio this weekend will be Tony Simeone, Ryan Harris, and Johnny Soper. It’s a new-look team for the 2024 college football season following Paul Burmeister’s departure. Simeone, whose tones will be familiar to basketball fans in South Bend, makes his debut as the “Voice of the Irish” in 2024, while Soper became the studio host this year.
