‘A Mindset of Constant Improvement’ – How Notre Dame Overcame Northern Illinois Loss To Book Sugar Bowl Berth

Notre Dame's journey to the Sugar Bowl proves that the Irish weren't done fighting after an early-season loss, as Marcus Freeman explains.

As the Notre Dame Fighting Irish prepares to face a formidable Georgia Bulldogs team in the Sugar Bowl, they can’t help but reflect on the season that brought them here—a year defined by resilience, growth, and an unwavering commitment to improvement.

Marcus Freeman Explains How Notre Dame Bounced Back From Early Season Adversity

In early September, college football fans across the country were stunned when unranked Northern Illinois upset Notre Dame in South Bend. For a team harboring championship aspirations, the loss was a devastating blow that shook the very foundation of their season. Doubts rose, critics spoke volumes, and many wrote off the Fighting Irish entirely.

The aftermath of that loss could have been disastrous for most programs. Momentum can shift quickly in college football, and a high-profile loss like this often derails even the most talented teams. But under the leadership of head coach Marcus Freeman, Notre Dame refused to succumb to the negativity.

Instead, the team took the loss as a wake-up call, a chance to address weaknesses, and an opportunity to grow stronger. The Irish weren’t done fighting yet, as Freeman explained to the media earlier this week.

”I think it’s a constant improvement. There was some issues and mistakes that we made in week one versus A&M that were probably masked to the outside by the outcome of the game. And they were obviously magnified the following week because of the outcome of the game.”

“What we have to do is continuously improve,” Freeman continued. “I think there was some valuable lessons that the loss to NIU taught us, but it’s this constant chase for improvement, every week, every day, that we have been able to make, and we still continue to have that mindset.”

“So how different is this team now? It is different because we’ve improved. No matter where you’re at, no matter what the outcome of the last game was, it’s a mindset of constant improvement. And I know we’re a much-improved team now than we were back then.”

Since that early setback, Notre Dame has been nearly unstoppable. They’ve not only defeated every opponent but done so in ways that have silenced even their harshest critics. Blowout wins against teams like Army and Georgia Tech demonstrated the team’s ability to dominate on both sides of the ball.

Freeman’s defense tightened up, holding opponents to an average of just 13.7 points per game after the Northern Illinois loss. On offense, running back Jeremiyah Love made huge strides in his role toward stardom. Quarterback Riley Leonard also found his groove, orchestrating an efficient offensive attack.

Perhaps the most impressive moment of Notre Dame’s redemption tour came in the first round of the College Football Playoffs, where they faced an impressive Indiana team. While many expected a close game, the Irish delivered one of their most complete performances of the season, as Notre Dame walked away with a commanding 27-17 victory.

It’s not just the results that have impressed—it’s the way the Irish have played. The team has displayed a grit and determination after the embarrassing home loss in September.

Now, with the Sugar Bowl victory on the line, the Irish are focused on one final test: a showdown against SEC powerhouse Georgia.
