The Texas Longhorns were one of the best teams in all of college football last season as they made it to the College Football Playoff Semifinal, where they lost to eventual national champion Ohio State. Simply put, that is what money can buy in today’s game.
But how much is an elite college football roster worth? The Longhorns are reportedly spending between $35 and $40 million for next season’s roster. While a lot of that reported money is going to QB Arch Manning, is this really what it takes to win in this age of college football?

Texas Longhorns’ $35–$40 Million Roster Investment Raises Eyebrows Ahead of 2025 Season
Paying players is the name of the game in college athletics now, and that has certainly been the case with Texas over the past few seasons. It also doesn’t look like that is going to change anytime soon.
According to On3, the Longhorns have spent a reported $35-40 million on their 2025 roster. That is a lot of money, which means there likely is a lot of talent on the roster for the upcoming season.
At the end of last season, perhaps the athletic program’s loss to a loaded Ohio State team in the semifinals of the College Football Playoff prompted it to break out the checkbook.
Could Texas Make a National Title Run in 2025?
After winning 13 games last season, the team came up just a bit short against the eventual champions from Columbus, Ohio. Now, they need to find a way to respond.
After losing quarterback Quinn Ewers, wide receiver Matthew Golden, offensive tackle Kelvin Banks Jr., and defensive back Jahdae Barron to the NFL, the team will have to make up for a lot. Luckily, the emergence of young quarterback Arch Manning should keep the team afloat.
Additionally, running back Quintrevion Wisner will be back for another year after rushing for over 1,000 yards last season.

Defensively, plenty of upperclassmen will be taking the reins at each level of the defense, which could be great for a team that lost some starters this offseason to the NFL.
In a tough SEC, look for head coach Steve Sarkisian to get this team over the 10-win hurdle at the very least.
If they can scrape together some wins over fellow SEC powers, a return to the College Football Playoff makes the most sense.
