Houston Cougars head coach Willie Fritz is hoping to win the national championship and he believes the program has all the ingredients to dominate college football.
Ahead of Saturday’s Texas Bowl against the LSU Tigers, Fritz laid out ambitious long-term plans, highlighting reasons why the program can win a national championship one day.
“The ultimate goal is to win a national championship here at Houston,” Fritz told reporters. “I mean, how important is it to sort of let people verbalize it and let people—well, you really do. I believe it’s possible. I mean, there’s not a better recruiting area in the nation than Houston, Texas. There might be some people who think, ‘He’s just saying that,’ and other people who say, ‘Yeah, he’s right — it is the best area.’
“We’ve got to keep these kids in town. We’ve got dynamite facilities. I just think we can recruit at a high, high level. We’ve shown that the last couple of years. The first year, it was kind of tough for us to be able to do that, coming in so late. But that’s a goal for us, and I think it’s a realistic goal.”

The Cougars finished fourth in the Big 12 standings with a 9-3 overall record, while going 6-3 in the conference. This is Fritz’s second season in Houston and last season he finished with a 4-8 record. Thus, it was a huge turnaround that he pioneered in just his second season with the program. And that is why he’s confident that he can take the program to their natty dreams.

Willie Fritz Shakes Up Houston Coaching Staff Ahead of Texas Bowl and 2026 Season
Willie Fritz is already laying out the groundwork to be even more successful next season. He is reshaping his coaching staff after a successful season that will end with the Texas Bowl.
Ahead of their bowl game, Fritz has promoted quarterbacks coach and passing game coordinator Shawn Bell to assistant head coach while retaining his role with the quarterbacks. Bell replaces former assistant head coach and wide receivers coach Derrick Sherman who took a job at Iowa State.
On the defensive front, Fritz has hired Marcus Trice as the Cougars’ secondary coach after Josh Christian-Young took a coaching role at the University of Kentucky.
