Texans Eye North Dakota State’s Grey Zabel to Bolster Offensive Line
Zabel, who stands 6-foot-6 and weighs 312 pounds, has proven to be exceptionally versatile by starting at multiple offensive line positions during his collegiate career. Over the last three seasons, he has started 16 games at left tackle, 17 at right tackle, and four at left guard.
Zabel’s adaptability is complemented by his outstanding athleticism. At the NFL Scouting Combine, he recorded a 36.5-inch vertical jump—the highest among offensive linemen—and a broad jump of 9 feet, 3 inches, ranking him in the top six for his position.
The Texans have struggled to protect their quarterback, allowing a large number of sacks last season. This gap has highlighted the pressing need for dependable and versatile offensive linemen who can fill multiple roles and improve the overall performance of the line.
Zabel’s aggressiveness and athleticism make him an excellent run blocker, capable of generating and sealing lanes effectively. Despite occasional challenges with power movements, his balance and ability to resist bull rushes are impressive in pass protection.
The Texans hold the 25th overall pick in the first round of the 2025 NFL Draft. While their primary focus may be on the offensive line, they will also need to address other team needs and evaluate available prospects.
ESPN’s Jordan Reid updated his list of the Top 50 players this week, and Zabel comes in at No. 29.
“I thought he was the best performer at the Senior Bowl regardless of position, showcasing his physicality and strong anchor,” Reid said of Zabel.
Zabel ranks No. 23 on ESPN draft analyst Field Yates’ list of the Top 32 prospects in the draft.
NFL Draft analyst Daniel Jeremiah ranks Zabel as the 24th overall prospect, emphasizing his potential value in the early rounds. Given the Texans’ urgent need to improve their offensive line, selecting Zabel could bring immediate rewards while also contributing to the team’s long-term stability.
