The former Florida Gators quarterback, DJ Lagway, shocked college football when he entered the transfer portal on Monday. Lagway joined the program last year and has a good season. In 2025, however, his performance dipped.
A player of Lagway’s talent entering the transfer portal is always exciting. Schools know how they can benefit from them while developing them as NFL-level players. But in this case, there are some red flags that Lagway brings with him.
On a recent episode of Always College Football, Greg McElroy talked about Lagway, what he brings to the table, and why programs wouldn’t rush to bring him in. McElroy said that on talent alone, Lagway has the potential to be the best quarterback in college football.
“He’s got all the talent. He has had tons of success at times and he is rare. He’s very very rare. But with that rare talent, does come a decent dose of volatility,” McElroy said.
He pointed to Lagway completing just over 63% of his passes, having 2264 yards, 16 touchdowns, and 14 interceptions. But the big red flag that could be a major factor for programs is his decision-making.
“The big red flag was the decision making under pressure, the interceptions, and now over the course of his career, two season, he’s got 23 picks in two years. That’s almost one a game. And that I think is a problem because he’s got crazy high ceiling,” McElroy added.
McElroy said that there’s a huge gap between the talent and what we have seen so far from Lagway. In his opinion, going to a system that fits his game and coaches who know how to develop quarterbacks would be the ideal move for him.

DJ Lagway Wanted to Stay in Florida
Florida underwent a change at the head coaching position. Billy Napier was fired, and Jon Sumrall assumed responsibility for the program. Lagway had several conversations with the coach and expressed his wish to remain in Florida.
However, Sumrall had a few questions of his own regarding Lagway’s position in the team, his season performance, and more, which potentially damaged their relationship. Chris Hummer of CBS Sports explained it in his report.
“Lagway’s initial meeting with the new Florida staff did not go well, per multiple sources. New Florida head coach Jon Sumrall questioned who Lagway is as a football player. The new staff opted to challenge the high-priced quarterback, pushing him on his competitiveness and work ethic,” Hummer wrote.
Despite the poor season, Lagway still has all the talent one needs, and he is only 20 years old. He is known as a hard-working athlete, and there are plenty of programs that will value his talent and dedication while committing to work on his red flags.
