Grambling State HC Makes Feelings Very Clear On Almost Bagging Jeremiah Smith’s Signature While At LSU

Grambling State Tigers coach Mickey Joseph gave his thoughts on a star wide receiver his team just faced, one that he shared could’ve played for him with the LSU Tigers. On Sunday, Sept. 7, the Ohio State Buckeyes, led by the likes of Jeremiah Smith, defeated the Tigers in their week two matchup by an astounding 70 points, 70-0, on their home pitch.

During the post-game presser, coach Joseph was asked about his thoughts on Smith and how he played. Joseph believes that Smith has NFL first-round talent potential in his role, and even admitted that he could’ve played for his previous program. Joseph was once an assistant coach and wide receiver coach at LSU, while Smith committed to the Buckeyes back in 2024.

“ He’s a little longer, but he’s a dude. He’s a dude. He could have played for me at LSU. He could have been in that lineup…Just the route running his speed and his hand, and he, he’s tough. He’s tough. We hit him one good time and he just popped up. So he’s gonna be, he’s a first-round pick,” Joseph explained. (0:01)

Coach Joseph and the rest of the Tigers now set their focus towards their week three matchup, which is the Kentucky State Therobreds. Grambling will seek to return to its winning ways after a huge 2025 season-opening victory against the Langston Lions on Saturday, Sept. 13, on its home pitch. In the 2024 season, Joseph led the Tigers to an overall record of 5-7 (2-6 SWAC-West).

Despite The Loss, Mickey Joseph Feels That The Grambling Tigers Earned Their Opponents’ Respect

Also during his post-game press conference, coach Mickey Joseph shared that he feels that he still has a great football team at the end of the day, one that he claims earned the respect of the Ohio State Buckeyes, who are one of the premier teams in the country. This is because Joseph knows how much his overall team fought, as well as the assurance he got from a swift conversation with Buckeyes coach Ryan Day.

“I know I got a good football team on my level, and I don’t have to face any more FBS Power Fives or Group of Fives. Everything now is D2 and FCS. So, we good. We came out healthy. So, I just told the boys, ‘Don’t pout. Smile. Keep your head up ’cause you fought.’ See, sometimes when you fight like that, people respect you more. So, we probably got their respect. They beat us, but they probably respect our kids,” Joseph said. (2:57)
