LSU Tigers quarterback Garrett Nussmeier is gearing up for a pivotal 2025 season, carrying the weight of high expectations. After leading the Tigers to a solid 9-4 finish in 2024, he capped off the year in style with a commanding 44-31 victory over the Baylor Bears in the Texas Bowl.
Stepping into the spotlight as a full-time starter for the first time in his college career, Nussmeier didn’t disappoint. He racked up 4,052 passing yards, 29 touchdowns, and 12 interceptions while completing 64.2% of his throws. With another year to refine his game, he’s determined to elevate his performance and lead LSU to greater heights in 2025.

Garrett Nussmeier Reveals His Plans for the 2025 Season
Nussmeier didn’t hold back, making it clear that his ambitions for the 2025 season go far beyond incremental improvements. He isn’t just aiming to lift LSU’s seventh-place SEC ranking or secure a College Football Playoff berth.
He has his sights set on something far greater—leading LSU into national championship contention. With unwavering confidence, Nussmeier clarified that the Tigers’ mission is to keep playing deep into January.
“I think I’m worried about doing the best I can to help LSU win a national championship,” Nussmeier said. “That’s the mindset; that’s the energy and intensity that I bring every single day. It’s not about me, it’s not about the transition or the Year 2 (jump), it’s about LSU football and Year 4 under coach Kelly, what are we going to do?” Nussmeier said.
“We’re not afraid to admit it. We’ve set the standard of where we expect to be. We expect to play football in January next year.”@LSUfootball 5th-year senior quarterback Garrett Nussmeier on moving into 2025. #LSU https://t.co/eWXqm2swnm pic.twitter.com/DIsyIunwWl

“And you know, we’re not afraid to admit it, we’ve set the standard of where we expect to be, and we expect to play football in January next year,” he added.
However, Nussmeier’s bold aspirations might not fit with SEC powerhouses like Georgia Bulldogs and Texas Longhorns. The SEC is a gauntlet stacked with elite programs hungry for glory. If LSU wants to turn this dream into reality, they must battle through some of the toughest competition in college football.
Garrett Nussmeier Breaks Silence on His Dad Coaching the New Orleans Saints
Garrett Nussmeier isn’t the only one making headlines in football. His father, Doug Nussmeier, is set to act as offensive coordinator for the New Orleans Saints in 2025. In an interview, Nussmeier shared his excitement about his father’s new opportunity.
Nussmeier couldn’t hide his excitement about his father returning to the NFL, especially with the Saints, a team he once played for. After years of coaching at the collegiate level, Doug Nussmeier is now stepping onto the pro stage, and his son sees it as a full-circle moment in their football journey.
“Obviously, it’s going to be really cool for not just me and my dad but my entire family to have him that close. I tell people all the time [that] I’ve been a Saints fan my entire life because he played there and was always in college,” Nussmeier said.
“Since he’s been in the NFL, I haven’t really had the opportunity, so now I can be a full Who Dat again, and so I’m excited for that. I think he’s really excited to be back there. It’s great for our family and great for him. So I’m excited for him, and it’s going to be really, really cool,” he added.
