Garrett Nussmeier Confesses to Being Scared of Potential ‘Problem’ LSU Might Be Facing in 2025

LSU quarterback Garrett Nussmeier is expected by many experts to be one of the best QBs in college football next season. He is coming off a tremendous first season as a starter, completing 337 of 525 passing attempts for 4,052 yards and 29 TDs.

However, on Friday morning, he spoke to On3’s Pete Nakos about being scared of a potential problem for the Tigers. The Tigers have lost five straight season openers and could make it a sixth this year.

“We’re not hiding from it,” Nussmeier said. “We accept that it’s a problem. We know that we have to find a way to fix it.”

The LSU Tigers will play the Clemson Tigers in their season opener on Saturday, August 30. They will try to break their streak of five straight season-opening losses.

The Tigers last won their season opener in 2019, defeating Georgia Southern 55-3. In 2020, they lost to Mississippi State in the season opener, followed by UCLA in 2021, Florida State in 2022, and Florida State again in 2023. Then, in 2024, they lost 27-20 to USC before winning their next six games.

After winning six straight, the Tigers looked like they were going to contend for the SEC championship. However, they then lost three straight games, including a disappointing defeat at the hands of unranked Florida. This knocked them out of playoff contention.

Garrett Nussmeier Enters the 2025 Season as One of Heisman Trophy Favorites

While the LSU Tigers will try to overcome their struggles in their season opener, Garrett Nussmeier will try to establish himself as the best player in college football.

Heading into the season, Nussmeier is already one of the betting favorites to win the Heisman Trophy. He has +800 odds, according to FanDuel, giving him the second-best odds to win the award, behind only Texas QB Arch Manning. The top five contenders are as follows:

    1. QB Arch Manning (Texas) +700
    2. QB Garrett Nussmeier (LSU) +800
    3. QB Cade Klubnik (Clemson) +900
    4. WR Jeremiah Smith (Ohio State) +1300
    5. QB Drew Allar (Penn State) +1400

Colorado Buffaloes two-way star Travis Hunter won the Heisman Trophy this past season. However, the Heisman is typically won by quarterbacks, giving Nussmeier a higher chance of claiming the award in 2025.
