Garrett Nussmeier Injury Update: Brian Kelly Shares Key Info On LSU QB’s Surgery Ahead Of Week 6 Matchup

LSU quarterback Garrett Nussmeier has been battling an abdominal strain that has slowed his progress this season. Early reports suggested surgery could be required, but the program has confirmed that is not the case.

The injury has been managed carefully, with his workload adjusted to avoid setbacks. Nussmeier is said to be moving past the worst of the issue, and the Tigers expect him to be available moving forward.

LSU has been careful in handling his recovery, especially during the bye, to ensure he can stay on the field without risking further aggravation.

Head coach Brian Kelly recently shared an important update on Nussmeier’s injury. He discarded all rumors about the quarterback needing surgery for the same by calling it “misinformation.”

“Those are not based on any facts. They’re quite silly, actually. This is misinformation,” Kelly SAID. “It’s been slow to heal. But as I mentioned, he’s on the backside of that. He’s getting rest this week, and he’ll be the Garrett Nussmeier that he needs to be as we get into the very difficult part of our schedule.”

The abdominal strain followed a preseason stretch, during which Nussmeier also managed minor knee tendinitis. While neither problem has been serious enough to sideline him long-term, both have disrupted rhythm and consistency at a critical point in the season.

The Tigers are 4-1 in the season so far, only losing against Ole Miss in last week’s matchup. Now, they have a very important game coming up against South Carolina. Fortunately, they’ll have a 12-day gap to prepare and ensure their players are in good shape.

Garrett Nussmeier Has Not Performed at His Full Potential

Garrett Nussmeier’s numbers have been steady but not explosive. He has completed more than two-thirds of his passes and thrown for just under 200 yards per game. His ability to stretch defenses has been visible, but turnovers and stalled drives have limited LSU’s scoring output.

Against Ole Miss, he managed one touchdown but also threw a costly interception, adding to the frustration for the offense. The Tigers as a whole have struggled to find consistency. At 2–3 heading into Week 6, their offense averages just over 27 points per game, a mark that lags behind the SEC’s elite.

The offensive line has allowed pressure, and the running game has failed to provide balance. Nussmeier’s health is central to stabilizing the unit, as LSU looks to avoid slipping further in the standings.
