‘Uncareful With the Ball’ — 2025 Heisman Fortrunner Garrett Nussmeier Hit With Brutal Review From LSU Beat Writer

Garrett Nussmeier is heading into the 2025 season with serious momentum, including Heisman buzz and a shot at continuing LSU’s recent QB success story. But not everyone’s convinced he’s a sure thing.

In an interview segment recorded recently, TigerBait.com’s Preston Guy praised Nussmeier’s talent but also noted troubling inconsistencies, specifically warnings about his carelessness in key moments last season. As the expectations mount, ball security and decision-making loom considerably.

LSU’s Next Star or Another Overhyped Arm?

Beat Writer Sounds the Alarm on Turnovers

LSU insider Preston Guy, during a YouTube appearance, analyzed Nussmeier’s performance in 2023 and laser-focused on one area: ball security. As Guy said, “He was too uncareful with the ball,” adding that Nussmeier threw 10 picks in the last half of the year, thrice in a game against Texas A&M. While his earlier performance was more composed, Guy made it very clear that the reflections during the late season become red flags for a quarterback expected to do big things early in the season.

Deep Ball Accuracy Still a Question Mark

He pointed out that aside from those turnovers, Nussmeier needs to improve on his deep ball. “It was only at the very end of the year that he started to hit it,” Guy said, noting that there were open receivers, yet LSU’s offense usually missed out on chances at big plays because of inconsistent throws. Guy mentioned that better wideouts this season could certainly help; however, Nussmeier needs to become a more reliable deep passer if LSU intends to compete at the national level.

    Heisman Hype Vs. Reality

While he is a top-five betting favorite for the 2025 Heisman, Guy advised fans not to get too carried away. New York is a “possibility” toward that end, but there’s no guarantee. “To expect him to come in as Jaden Daniels or Joe Burrow is asking a lot,” he said.

With NFL potential and the tools to be incredible, Nussmeier would need a leap in efficiency and ball security for LSU to make a serious title run without leaning on running the ball and playing defense.
