Future Face of the Franchise? Seattle Seahawks Trade Veteran QB Day After Drafting Jalen Milroe

The 2025 NFL Draft is well underway, and teams are beginning to choose who they’re looking to lead their team into the future. The Seattle Seahawks seem to be going all-in on their newly-drafted quarterback, Jalen Milroe, as far as trading their veteran quarterback, Sam Howell.

To say the Seahawks quarterback room is changing would be a massive understatement. Following Geno Smith and Sam Howell last season, the team now has three brand-new quarterbacks. ESPN insider Adam Schefter broke the news on X, formerly Twitter, earlier today that the Seahawks will be trading away their veteran quarterback, Howell, in favor of banking on Milroe.

Is Jalen Milroe the Future of Seattle Seahawks Football?

One day after selecting Jalen Milroe in Round 3 of the 2025 NFL Draft, the Seahawks traded away veteran QB Sam Howell. What’s next for the future of the Crimson Tide quarterback, and is he indeed the future of the Seattle football team?

Seattle selected Milroe with the No. 92 overall pick in the third round of Friday night’s portion of the 2025 NFL Draft. The Seahawks see what all of college football has seen for a couple of years now. It seems like Milroe is truly the one banked on to be the future of the Seahawks franchise.

The Seahawks took a flier on Howell last season to be Geno Smith’s backup quarterback, after he spent two seasons with the Washington Commanders. Howell was a fifth-round pick out of North Carolina in the 2022 NFL Draft, and he started all 17 games for the Commanders in the 2023 NFL season.

Unfortunately for Howell, the Commanders finished 4-13 that season, leading them to select Jayden Daniels out of LSU with their No. 2 overall pick in the 2024 NFL Draft. Daniels was the Offensive Rookie of the Year for the Commanders, while Howell was back to backup status for the Seahawks.

With Howell now going to the Vikings to back up JJ McCarthy, Milroe is currently the favorite to be starting for Seattle come the time the 2025 NFL season kicks off. The Seahawks now have Milroe, Sam Darnold, and Drew Lock in the quarterback room ahead of the season.

Milroe’s only real competition for the starting job could come in Darnold who randomly decided to ball out of his mind in the 2024 NFL season for Minnesota before fizzling out in the playoffs. However, despite it all, Milroe is now being hailed as the future of the Seahawks franchise.
