Fran Brown has lately been all over the news. However, it is not just for his coaching. The Syracuse head coach is pushing for a combined practice with Colorado, potentially changing how NCAA teams prepare in the spring. Brown and Deion Sanders are pushing the idea.
The two are awaiting NCAA approval, and the Division-I FBS Oversight Committee is set to make a decision soon. Brown recently even discussed the historical significance of this practice. He said, “This would be good for us to be the first to do it at two historical schools… and two African American men, too.”

How Fran Brown’s Upbringing Shapes His Coaching
Brown’s story began in Camden, N.J., a city known for its tough streets. He grew up in a community where sports provided a path to big things. His early football career took off at Hudson Valley Community College before transferring to Western Carolina University.
At Western Carolina University, he was a cornerback to be watched out for. Soon, Fran Brown was named team captain and earned First Team All-SoCon honor. However, his football journey did not end in college. Brown even had a stint in the NFL with the Cincinnati Bengals before transitioning to coaching.
Beyond the field, Brown’s family plays a central role in his life. He is married to Teara Brown. Teara and Fran Brown were high school sweethearts who went on to get married. The two have three children: Fran Jr., Brayden, and Ivy Ann. Fran Jr. is already following in his dad’s footsteps and is playing football at Syracuse, a program his father has a big hand in building.
The program has improved since Fran Brown took over as Syracuse’s head coach on November 28, 2023. He led the team to a 10-win season in just one season, tying a record for the most wins by a first-year Syracuse head coach. To add on, under Brown, the Orange took down three top-25 opponents, secured a bowl win against Washington State, and set new program records across multiple offensive and defensive categories.
Fran Brown’s recruiting process has also been a big change for Syracuse. Not so long ago, 247Sports recognized it as the No. 1 recruiter for the 2024 class.
