Hall of Famer Kurt Warner Reveals Surprising NFL Combine Tactic Behind Handing Out His Number

Warner has been outspoken about his quarterback evaluations, particularly in preparation for the 2025 NFL Draft. He has analyzed prospects such as Cam Ward and Shedeur Sanders, offering insights into their strengths and weaknesses based on his extensive NFL experience.

During a recent appearance on The Joel Klatt Show, the Hall of Famer shared his unexpected approach when evaluating quarterback prospects at the NFL Combine.

Warner revealed that he makes a point of handing out his phone number to as many young quarterbacks as possible with a clear purpose in mind.

“I try to get my number to as many of the young quarterbacks as I possibly can and say, ‘Call me, ask me a question,'” Warner explained. “Let me give you a perspective on a play. Let me tell you how I think about it. Let me challenge what you’re—anything and everything I could possibly do to help you, let me help you if you want to call me.”

Despite Warner’s efforts, few players take him up on the offer.

“None of them [call],” Warner admitted. “I mean, very, very few will ever reach out and do that. I’ve had– I’ve had a few guys. I take notes every week in the NFL on– on all the games.”

While Warner has built relationships with some quarterbacks in the league and regularly sends his game notes to several players, responses vary. Still, Warner’s goal remains clear: to provide guidance.

“I give my number to everybody,” Warner said. “Nobody calls, so I don’t expect you to call. But use the number if I can ever help you. But my point is always I want to give them as much knowledge as I possibly can so they can take ownership when the ball is in their hands.”

Warner emphasized the importance of quarterbacks taking ownership of their decisions on the field.

“At the end of the day, if the ball’s in my hands and we have a crappy play call, and I make a bad decision, they’re never going to say, ‘Hey, was that a good play call?'” Warner stated. “The sooner you can take ownership of where you’re at and the offense you’re running, the better.”

Kurt Warner excelled in his 12-season NFL career with the St. Louis Rams and Arizona Cardinals. He led the Rams to a Super Bowl win in 2000 and earned MVP titles in 1999 and 2001.
