Former NFL cornerback Domonique Foxworth no longer believes that Bill Belichick will be a good college football coach for the North Carolina Tar Heels football program. Foxworth made clear that it’s not Belichick’s football knowledge that could present a problem but, in his opinion, his recruiting tactics and abilities.
On “The Domonique Foxworth Show,” Foxworth also explained the difference between the NFL and college level.
Though many expected Belichick to return to the NFL in some capacity next season, he surprised the football world in December when he announced that he would become the new head coach of the Tar Heels.
What Did Domonique Foxworth Say About Bill Belichick?
Foxworth detailed how the college and professional game was very different from each other, with the skill level between players being much closer in the NFL.
"With a few months to think about it, I feel less confident that (Bill Belichick) is going to be a good college coach. I think I overestimated what his résumé can do for recruiting. The tough thing is if I'm a WR and Ohio State or LSU calls me…" – @Foxworth24… pic.twitter.com/wA2BBmZYni

“With a few months to think about it, I feel less confident that (Bill Belichick) is going to be a good college coach. I think I overestimated what his résumé can do for recruiting,” he stated.
As a result, Foxworth emphasized how important recruiting is, something that he is unsure Belichick can do at UNC to the same degree as other premiere college programs.
“The tough thing is, if I’m a WR and Ohio State calls me, or LSU calls me, and they are like, you know what we do, we put Hall of Fame receivers in the NFL,” Foxworth said.
Will Belichick Be a Good College Football Coach?
Though, in theory, it’s possible for Belichick to be successful in college football, there’s no question that the overall process will be an adjustment for the six-time Super Bowl champion head coach.
First and foremost, as Foxworth alluded to, recruiting and the transfer portal have become such a large part of the college football experience. As a result, it will be vital for a program like UNC to be active and sharp in who they bring to North Carolina.
Though they are a major program and will continue to grow with Belichick’s arrival, UNC doesn’t boast the same attention as college football powerhouses such as Texas, Ohio State, LSU, Notre Dame, or Michigan to name a few.
As a result, though his name and résumé do carry weight and are important factors, Belichick will need to remain vigilant and active in the transfer portal if he wants to find similar NFL success at the college level.
