Former LSU Running Back John Emery Jr. Signs With UTSA For His Seventh College Football Season

After six years with the LSU Tigers, including a 2019 season where he helped LSU win its fourth national championship, running back John Emery Jr. is heading to a new team. Emery is joining the UTSA Roadrunners for the 2025 season.

Emery played in 38 games at LSU, but injuries and academic issues interrupted his path to ultimate success. He’s now set to spend his seventh year in college at UTSA.

He Gotta Be A Doctor’—Former LSU Star RB’s Next Move Has College Football Fans Stunned

On rare occasions do athletes spend six years playing college ball but Emery is about to spend his seventh year and fans have jokes about the situation.

In most colleges, it takes about seven years to get a degree in medicine and fans are making jokes about Emery pursuing a degree.

Emery played with the likes of Joe Burrow, Jamar Chase and Justin Jefferson who have all spent at least four years in the league. He also played with Jayden Daniels, Malik Nabers and Brian Thomas Jr who are all set for their second year in the NFL.

Before LSU, Emery was a four-star prospect out of high school, and the No. 2 running back in the nation, as ranked by 247Sports. With the LSU Tigers, Emery Jr appeared in 38 games with five starts.

He totaled 1,123 rushing yards and 14 touchdowns on the ground. He also recorded 37 catches for 328 yards and two touchdowns. Emery averaged 5.9 yards per rush in his time at LSU.

Emery missed all but one game of the 2024 season with a torn ACL. He also missed much of the 2023 season due to an injury and missed the 2021 season due to academic issues. This gives a more logical explanation for his spending seven years in college rather than trying to attain a degree in medicine.

UTSA also returns sophomore running back Robert Henry Jr., who recorded 706 rushing yards last season with seven touchdowns, averaging 5.4 yards per carry. He also added 21 catches for 199 yards and one touchdown.
