What Did Bobby Carpenter Say About Matt Patricia’s Ohio State Hire?

Carpenter played in the NFL for seven seasons for the Cowboys, the then-St. Louis Rams, the Miami Dolphins, the Detroit Lions, and the New England Patriots. He played his college football with the Buckeyes and was selected No. 18 overall by the Cowboys in the 2006 NFL Draft.

ESPN reporter and writer Pete Thamel broke the news of Patricia becoming the program’s next defensive coordinator to the social media platform X.

“ESPN story on Ohio State finalizing Matt Patricia’s hire as the new defensive coordinator, per sources. Buckeyes also promote secondary coach Tim Walton to Co-DC and safeties coach Matt Guerrieri to defensive pass-game coordinator,” Thamel stated.

In response, Carpenter highlighted how he had a great experience while playing under Patricia with the Patriots. He also indicated that the struggles with the Lions are not very relevant to this scenario, as it will not be in the same role.

“For those Buckeye fans who don’t like the hire…for whatever reason. Played for Matty P in New England…he’s as smart and measured as you’ll find. Great communicator and incredibly creative. It didn’t work in Detroit as an HC…happens to a lot of coordinators…but he’s not hired at the HC, so don’t worry about that,” Carpenter said.

Ohio State’s Recent Coaching Staff Changes

Since winning this season’s National Championship, Ohio State’s coaching staff has changed drastically.

On the offensive side of the ball, it was announced that offensive coordinator Chip Kelly would depart the program and become the next offensive coordinator of the NFL’s Las Vegas Raiders.

Defensively, the program lost defensive coordinator Jim Knowles, who elected to become the next defensive coordinator of the Big 10 conference rival Penn State Nittany Lions.

However, the program appears to have found its replacement for Knowles in former NFL coach Patricia.
