Mike Norvell’s Florida State was the obvious favorite heading into the Week 5 matchup against the Virginia Cavaliers this week, as they were ready to carry the momentum from their 3-1 season so far this year, including an electrifying week 1 win against Alabama.
The game didn’t end the way Seminoles fans had hoped, as FSU lost 46-38 in a double-overtime match at Charlottesville’s Scott Stadium.
The defense struggled for the first time in this season as they allowed 440 yards of offense and had difficulties making tackles.
Reacting to the upset, fans trolled Mike Norvell after the game:
“Mike Norvell when he’s not coaching against Kent State or East Texas A&M,” one fan took a shot at Florida State head coach by comparing him to Florida’s Billy Napier who has been struggling to will games in 2025.
“All FSU fans right now… but from a bridge,” another fan posted a clip of Josh Pate taking Virginia’s name in disbelief with a laughter after the disappointing loss.
“2 weeks to prepare. They get drug into a physical double overtime heartbreaking loss. Couldn’t ask for a better alley oop for another blowout in front of the world,” a fan expressed frustration with a meme.
“FSU media: Coach Mike Norvell why did you just keep scoring on East Texas A&M? Norvell,” another fan posted a clip of an individual saying “why, cause f*ck em that’s why.”
“Mike Norvell when he remembers he has a $60+ million buyout,” another fan joked with a photoshopped image of Mike Norvell sitting on a beach smiling.
“Mike Norvell after hearing he’s not the worst P4 head coach in the state of Florida,” a fan shared a meme after devastating Virginia loss.
“Me going back to my fu*k Mike Norvell narratives,” another fan joked with a person brushing off old books.
“Mike Norvell in big games: #USUSUSUSUSUSUS,” another fan posted two memes.

Mike Norvell’s on Disappointing Loss Against Virginia
The game didn’t just end on a disappointing note, it became a safety hazard when Virginia fans stormed the field after their win and risked the players’ safety.
However, in the postgame press conference, Mike Norvell said he wasn’t sure if there were any injuries and said that they have everybody in the locker room.
Norvell further looked back at the game and said the team wasn’t on the same page where they needed to be, which is something that has to be corrected.
The Florida State head coach further said their weakpoints were exposed and that they need to be better.
