5-Star Defensive Lineman Elijah Griffin Commits to Georgia

Five-star defensive lineman Elijah Griffin committed to Georgia. His size and athleticism could make him a high-level pass rusher for the Bulldogs.

Five-star defensive lineman Elijah Griffin has committed to the Georgia Bulldogs, according to Hayes Fawcett of On3. The Savannah Christian Preparatory School defensive lineman’s commitment is the latest in a series of recruiting wins for Kirby Smart’s team.

How did the Bulldogs land Griffin, and what does it mean for Georgia?

5-Star Defensive Lineman Elijah Griffin Commits to Georgia

At least in the past few years, the Bulldogs have clamped down in-state, to the point where it’s almost a foregone conclusion that the top players will sign with the team in Athens, Ga. Georgia has signed half of the top three players in the state since 2021.

However, it was never set in stone that Griffin would pick the Bulldogs. South Carolina, in particular, did an excellent job recruiting the 6’4″, 290-pounder through multiple staff changes.

In the end, though, the country’s second-ranked prospect chose to stay in Georgia, partly due to defensive line coach Tray Scott’s recruiting efforts since mid-2021.

Griffin’s commitment gives Georgia verbal pledges from the two top defensive linemen in the state, who just so happen to be the two best at their position in the entire country.

What Griffin’s Commitment Means to Georgia

The Bulldogs continue reloading along the defensive line, as they’ve signed at least one five-star lineman in the last four recruiting cycles.

In the age of the transfer portal, it’s always difficult to keep talented depth. Still, as the best playmakers continue to consolidate onto the few elite teams, it’s incredibly important to stockpile as much talent as possible. That’s even more critical at the positions that require rotation, like at defensive tackle.

Griffin profiles as a high-level pass rusher with great athleticism. He’s a guy who could come in and immediately add some pass-rushing upside to the Bulldog defense. Georgia is deep enough to thrive without Griffin but expect the five-star standout to crack the rotation within his true freshman campaign.
