Houston Christian CB KJ Mackins Drawing Interest From Sun Belt Programs

As Michael Salvo recently wrote, Houston Christian cornerback KJ Mackins has gained interest from FBS schools, such as Appalachian State, Coastal Carolina, Texas State, Rice, and Old Dominion.

It seems that the Sun Belt is pushing for him hard. This is not a bad leap from a guy who has put in a lot of hard work to allow himself to play competitive football at the end of his college career.

The 5’11” senior from Greenwood, South Carolina, had three pass deflections, one forced fumble, and 15 total tackles for the Huskies last season. While the numbers may not jump off the page at you, his presence and ability do.

If he is looking for an opportunity to give himself a chance to play football beyond the college level, this might be it.

Could KJ Mackins Play in the Power Four?

Currently, no schools within the Power Four have shown interest in Mackins. But there are some teams out there who might need a veteran cornerback.

A team like the Arizona Wildcats, which lost cornerback Emmanuel Karnley to the portal in December, could be looking to add another veteran.

Purdue’s Markevious Brown is looking to head elsewhere for his senior season, so there is an opening in West Lafayette. Texas Tech recently lost sophomore cornerback Colton Hood to the portal, too.

Now, he will have a chance to try to make a name for himself in the FBS if he so chooses to go in that direction.
